Stage 9 boils down to dealing with hunchbacks (which you can get the same pattern every time if you always play that room the exact same way), and a few flying sections. You can relax a bit in 9-03 as you can't go any faster than the incremental autoscroll allows you to. Just don't fall too far behind!

General Advice
Stage 7 is one of the toughest parts of the whole run, requiring a lot of practice, especially on the bat fight in 7-04. Because of how Alucard's fireballs disappear upon hitting something, this gives you very little room to work with up the fight, less so than the bat fight on stage 4 you do with Trevor. Try to get to the bosses at 7-07 with at least 5 health left so you can attempt the quick kill on the Cyclops (he'll hit you for at least 4).

Full level playthrough
:*A very good run of stage 7 done in 2018 that used every most optimal strategy known about the stage. Attempt the 7-04 bat kill at your own risk!

Strategies
7-04
Get the big heart
Jump from the first block off the stairs you take (point A) to enter this room, then walk right so that Alucard is a few pixels right of the center of the block near the next staircase (point B). This is to manipulate the blob to let you jump forward and damage boost forward on the ledge above.
After climbing up the next set of stairs, jump forward and let the blob boost you forward. Continue walking then jump from where the skeleton is in this diagram and attack right after jumping to hit the candle with the money in it with Alucard's bottom fireball. After landing from that jump, jump again but shoot the fireballs only on your way down from the jump, because the candle you need to hit is at almost the same height as the candle with money in it. If you can hit that candle, then climb down the stairs and get the big heart, then jump over the skeleton and start flying to where the bat boss is. If you have to slow down while the third skeleton is on screen, then he'll move left and not right, slowing you down and hitting you in the process.

Bat fight
Simple: (most commonly used setup):
Starts at 0:00, and is the simplest strategy of the three best ones. By staying at the top platform and waiting for the bat to fly up towards you, you only have to time fireball attacks but you could lose time if the bat stays asleep for an extra 1-2 seconds, before flying within reach.

More technical / World Record Chaser (Baize86 setup):
Starts at 3:34, and uses the bottom middle platform while staying to the left of the bat. Now you have to time both jumps and attacks.

Extremely precise (levelengine setup):
Starts at 7:20, and uses the bottom-right platform at the start of the fight, then for the second hit, jumps to the middle with a well timed attack.

7-06, fly under the bridge
You need at least 9 hearts going up the flight of stairs into the bridge room or else you'll run short and fall to your death! If you play the bridge a bit slower then 10 would be just enough.

previes page

Useful Glitches
Animationless Primary Weapon Attacks
* Alucard can do an animationless regular attack on the frame after you stop crouching.

* Grant in the JP Version can perform a similar trick with his basic knife throwing attack.
* Grant in the US Version can cancel the attack animation by grabbing onto a wall.

Animationless Sub Item Drop
Frame perfect trick to skip sub item animation. This trick can be performed the frame a character drops from a block or lands.

Double Block Hit
*This trick can be done by both Trevor and Sypha by crouching and attacking and releasing crouch mid attack animation. Works on blocks, but unfortunately does not score a double hit on enemies. Grant can perform a similar trick with short hop + stab in the US version.

Stair Misalignment
Stairs will bring you in a diagonal line to the next platform. As far as I know this was done well in the J version. In the U version you can offset the starting position and walk off the screen on some places.

* Grant/Trevor character switch can be used to misalign on stairs in 9-01, allowing him to skip the majority of 9-01.
* Sypha can misalign on stairs in 9-01 using ice on the fleemen, allowing her to skip the majority of 9-01.
* Sypha can misalign on stairs at the end of the climb in 9-03 by using ice on the fuzzies.

Wrong Warp(s)
* A wrong warp which misaligns Grant on the stairs in stage 4-01 (the marsh) allows the player to travel through a glitch world to stage A much faster than it would take to play all of those stages.

Cyclops No Hammer Hitbox
Grant Floor Clipping
In some locations grant can jump/climb through the floor, to unintentionally skip areas of the game.

* Grant can climb through the floor before the end of 4-0B
* Grant can climb through the floor before the end of 5-0A

Grant Vertical Launching
Grant Vertical Scroll Breaking
Grant Horizontal Scrolling
Useless Glitches
Animationless Primary Weapon Attacks
* Grant can do an animationless regular attack on the frame after you stop crouching - however not fast enough RTA vs using a regular attack, but you can do a spiderman pose on the ground.
* Sypha can do an animationless regular attack on the frame after you stop crouching - however it doesn't have any range.

Grant Boss Wrap
* Grant Wraps to the top of the screen and is more difficult to kill

https://clips.twitch.tv/LaconicImpossibleGoatFunRun

Sunken City Falling Through the floor
Failed Wrong Warps
Grant Launching
Launching on 5-0C during Frankenstein's Monster Boss Fight will launch Grant to the top of the room and be unable to grab the orb to progress to the next level.

Stair Softlocks
There are three staircases in the game where the player loses control when using them, as the game is supposed to automatically have the player ascend up the stairs to the next screen. However, it is possible to get knocked off the stairs on the first frame the player loses control, effectively causing the game to freeze by never being able to autoclimb the stairs.
This stage is not very hard to do in a speedrun with Alucard as your partner, but it can be very stressful to try to get the second damage boost off of the Axe Armor's axe consistently, especially if you try to do it as fast as possible. Also, it's much easier to kill Death with Trevor but doing so with Alucard saves more time overall since you save about 4 seconds total. His fight is slower than Trevor's but you do 2 less character switches (which would cost you 4.6 seconds each time).

US is shorthand for American version, while JP is shorthand for Japanese
NOTE: Hit numbers on this page are based on hits with Trevor's Chain Whip/Morning Star!
:* Enemies in the JP version all do a set amount of damage. In the US version however, this is determined by stage.
:** In stages 1 to 3, the base damage is 2 (out of a maximum 16 points of health), then in stages 4 to 7, it climbs to 3, then in stages 8 to A, it rises to 4.
:* Bone Pillars take only 4 hits with a Chain Whip/Morning Star to kill in the JP version. In the US version, they'll take 6 hits with the same weapon.
:** They also shoot faster fireballs in the US version, and slightly more frequently than their JP counterparts.
:* Axe Armors are also stronger in the US version, taking 8 hits to kill versus 6 in the JP version. Also in the US version, their shields prevent crosses from passing through them to let them hit twice.
:* Bone Dragons in the JP version take 9 hits to kill and a hit anywhere on their body will count for damage. In US however, they take 11 hits and you must hit their head to do damage.
:** This change for hitting the head also applies to the Bone Dragon King boss.
:* Grant's main attack in the JP version is the throwing dagger, much like the one you can pick up as a drop in the US version. Even though it has a slower repeat rate, its long reach makes it better in most cases, although Japanese Grant runs are slower because of this. In the US version, he instead stabs enemies with his dagger which has a very short reach, and the thrown dagger is added back to his drop table which acts like his attack in Akumajou Densetsu.
:* Sypha's lightning spell in the JP version is slightly more accurate at homing in on enemies, and also does more damage than in the US version, because multiple lightning orbs can stack damage in the JP version. This makes Sypha JP runs faster than US ones on average.
:* In the pendulum room just before the staircase that leads to Dracula, bats were added to the US version (the Japanese version didn't have any).
:* The same is true for areas 6-04 and 6-05 (in the Sunken City).

General Advice
Stage 6 isn't very hard to as Alucard as you could fly past most hazards. However, this stage is very prone to RNG and you could easily end up with a segment time of +5/-5 seconds, or anywhere in between. The most challenging obstacles include the axe armor damage boost and manoeuvring around the bone pillar in the room where you fight the end boss. Worst case scenario, you can defer to Trevor if you're really low on health for the boss fight (though you'll lose time by doing so).

Full level playthrough
put video here, for both safe/easy and world record strategies

:*This assumes you get a high axe from the axe armor in 6-02. Having to fly around the ledge instead of clipping through it costs you ~3-4 seconds, if not more.
:*The second form of Death can be killed slightly faster than this.

japanese strats, makes stage riskier overall

Strategies
6-02 Axe Armor
*put clips here*
The axe armor does one of two things (not sure how to get him to do one specific thing every time either); he throws his axe high or low. The high axe is easier to react to as you can land on the two blocks below the platform with the axe armor and just jump into the axe and easily use Alucard's bat form to clip through the ceiling. When doing this, hold up then right to navigate through the ceiling (don't use jump as you could get stuck!)

The low axe is the worst case and the backup strategy was only recently discovered by CLChambers00. If this does happen, fly up above the axe and try to get Alucard's top row of pixels in bat form to touch the ceiling. Then fly right and turn back to human form and try not to fly down when doing this! If you time your second transform just right, Alucard's head will be lined up with the top of the block and you can clip though by holding up. If he's any lower though, the clip will fail. Since this strategy is very hard to do, you can opt to fly around the ledge and axe armor and lose about 3 to 4 seconds of time.

The main obstacles of this last stage are getting the triple shot axe from double shot holy water and not losing the setup needed to do so to birds, and the Dracula boss fight. Heart management is also crucial since Alucard uses up a lot of them when flying and you have to kill 3 forms of Dracula.
The most technical part of it by far is the third phase of Drac.

General Advice
Mad Forest is fairly easy, though you do have to pay attention to heart count since you use a watch through the first half of the stage. Avoid getting the axe in 3-01 since the watch is more ideal as you get a lot of big heart drops in the section with the owls. Take the axe in 3-03, then you could either:
:* Break open enough objects/kill enough enemies to get it to a double shot
:* Get the dagger from one of the torches in 3-04, then use the dagger trick on the cyclops

Strategies
3-04, Cyclops Right Hand Side Kill
3-04, Cyclops Dagger Trick
Video required!~

This requires very good timing. If you throw the dagger above the cyclops's hammer as the lightning strikes, the lightning bolt hits the cyclops and inflicts 4 points of damage to him, making him much easier to tank and get a quick kill just by stabbing him to death.

You will have to ascend the tower with Trevor. This is one of the more annoying levels to speedrun as you have to fend off Medusa Heads as you climb the vertical areas. A trick is to try to play the level in whichever way you feel most comfortable with all the time, to try to get similar medusa spawn patterns that you're good at dealing with. Once getting Grant, leaving the tower is generally easier, as descending is far quicker plus you now have Grant's set of movement skills.

:* You generally want to have full health entering this boss fight to have more room to improvise during the Cyclops fight.
:* Stand on the block to the left of the second coffin and start throwing axes as the ghost enters the left coffin. After throwing 6 of them, step forward a bit and continue throwing. You should be able to deflect one of the bandages with your axe throws.
:* When Alucard uses his bat form, your heart count depletes faster in the US version.
:* Sypha's lightning spell in the JP version is slightly more accurate at homing in on enemies, and also does more damage than in the US version. This makes Sypha JP runs faster than US ones on average.
:* In the pendulum room just before the staircase that leads to Dracula, bats were added to the US version (the Japanese version didn't have any).
:* The same is true for areas 6-04 and 6-05 (in the Sunken City).
